February 15, 2018        "Orchids"   10:00 AM Pinewild Country Club

This month we will welcome Mr. Jason Harpster, a local orchid grower.  Mr. Harpster became interested in orchids about 15 years ago while an undergraduate at UNC Ashville. He works in the family business Central Security Systems in Southern Pines. Here he has his greenhouse where he grows his own cultivars. He invites those who are interested to come and see the many varieties he raises in his greenhouse.

Mr. Harpster received his MBA from UNC Greensboro. There he met a professor who introduced him to ice climbing and mountain climbing. This has become a passion which has led him to challenge mountains across the USA. He is a member of the Carolina Judging Center and is working toward his accreditation as a judge for the American Orchid Association.

He will bring some orchid specimens to our meeting and will demonstrate the repotting of root bound orchids. He will be happy to answer any of your questions and I am sure to look at your orchids and diagnose any problems he may see.

March 22, 2018             "Bus Trip:Art in Bloom"
                                        North Carolina Art Museum
Morning: Cameron Village & Lunch on your own

March 22 is our Spring Bus Trip.  This is earlier than usual for us to head out of Pinewild, but I think this trip will be worth it.  We will start our day in Cameron Village. Cameron Village is the center of many shops and restaurants.  It was the first planned community in the Raleigh area developed in 1947.  It was designated a National Historic Site in 2011. You are free to have lunch at any of the many restaurants in the village.

The next stop is the North Carolina Museum of Art for the Art in Bloom Exhibit.  We will have docents to accompany us through the exhibit.  The cost of the trip will be: $45.00 for anyone who is a member of the North Carolina Museum of Art.  Please inform me if you are a member of the Museum.  For those of us who are not members of the Museum, the cost of the bus and ticket to the Museum is $50.00.

This does NOT INCLUDE the cost of lunch.  More information will be forthcoming at the February meeting.  If you are interested in learning more about either of the two venues, you can check the web for Cameron Village and the North Carolina Museum of Art, Art in Bloom exhibitv
